Corner of Prairie and Main Streets:   After the Civil War Papinville was really growing. There  were many houses and businesses being built. Some of the businesses that were going strong were drug stores, several merchantile, blacksmith shops, butcher shops and at one time there were five doctors. Papinville was the only place they could cross the Marais des Cygnes with big loads in 1873.Papinville even had their own Post Office until 1906. We now get our mail out of Rockville. The telephone was operated in Charlie Burch’s house from 1904 to 1955 then KLM took over. There were small hotels and there were two churches. At one time they said that Papinville population was almost 700. To look at it now it is hard to believe Papinville was that big.

Corner of Main and Water Street:  Across the street from the metal/wooden bridge was a hotel. It was a two story house, but the people that lived their  rented out rooms. A number of steamboats  and keel boats would come up the river to deliver supplies to the businesses  in Papinville and also to Harmony Mission when it was in operation. This was known at the time as Government Riverboat Landing and where the American Fur Trading Company was located. Between 1867 and 1869 The Tom Stephens, a stern-wheeler boat, made as many as six trips from St. Louis to Papinville.

Next week the stories will be about the old walking bridge built in 1884. This bridge was deeded to the Papinville Historical Association. There is a stone on the east side of the bridge that you can read as you go across the bridge. The other story will be about the Missionaries traveling the Marais des Cygnes River to Harmony Mission, which is located about a mile up the river. You will walk on the road next to the river up to the Bates County Drainage Ditch .

Until next week for the rest of the story. Hope you are enjoying the stories. You will be getting a booklet of the stories and a map with your historical walk so you will know what was located in that area as you walk along the historical walk\run. Hope to be able to list more activities for the  Papinville fun day. Let’s keep the history going for the next generations.

Registration forms can be found on Facebook click Papinville  History and print out your form. Forms are also at the Butler and Rich Hill Citizens Bank.

The Carpenters Cup Summer Lunch Program

The past few years, the Carpenters Cup has been providing free summer lunches to the public. Typically, these lunches started after summer school ended but since there's no summer school this year, we plan to start giving out lunches the first part of June. These lunches were started so kids that normally got school lunches could have a noon day meal. With that said, the lunches are given to anyone. We serve 100 sacks lunches daily from Monday through Friday. They are delivered and given out on the square or at the south park. For these lunches to happen, we need donations of lunch food items such as lunch meats, cheese, peanut butter and jelly, bread, chips, cookies or brownies (store bought or homemade), puddings, or fruit cups, lunch sacks, sandwich baggies and money We also need volunteers to help prepare the lunches and to deliver the lunches. All food donations can be brought to the Carpenters Cup. Money donations can be brought to store or sent to us at 102 S. Bishop St. Butler, MO 64730. Volunteers can call 660-679-3333 to sign up. Thank you so much for helping to feed our children!

Who are the Nevada Griffons

The Nevada Griffons were formed in 1984 when a group of Nevada businessmen went about finding a way to bring summer college baseball to the city of Nevada.  They formed a board, named a general manager and began raising money via a weekly bingo game.  They joined the Jayhawk League, one of the premier leagues in the country at the time, with teams in Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. The name "Griffons" was chosen via a contest, with the winning name suggested by local sportswriter Kelly Bradham.

Griffons comes from the names of Clark Griffith (co-founder of the American League) and George Lyons, the only two Vernon Countians known to have played Major League Baseball.  In 1985, the first team was recruited and began play.  Players came from all over the United States, just as they still do now.  Each year the team plays a very busy schedule during the months of June and July, with time split between home games and away games. Most years the team competed in the post-season NBC (National Baseball Congress) World Series in Wichita, KS.

Players live with host families from the area, many of them developing life-long friendships.  Hosting a Griffon is something families look forward to all year long, and Griffons truly become part of the family while they are here.  Over the years, over 1000 players have come to Nevada to play baseball.  A significant number of those players have been drafted, and over 30 have played Major League Baseball.  In July of 2018, Trevor Hoffman (Griffons '87) was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 2009, citing financial and travel considerations, the team left the Jayhawk League to become part of the MINK (Missouri-Iowa-Nebraska-Kansas) League.  The league currently has 9 teams, the St. Joseph Mustangs, Chillicothe Mudcats, Sedalia Bombers, Joplin Outlaws, Jefferson City Renegades, Clarinda (IA) A's, Carroll (IA) Merchants and Des Moines Peak Prospects along with the Griffons.

The Griffons Board of Directors works yearround to raise the monies necessary to fund each summer season, somewhere between $55,000-$60,000 each year.  The committee sells fence signs, yearbook ads and other sponsorships; they hold monthly luncheons and organize fundraisers like a yearly Radio Auction, a Hole-in-One Golf event, Memorabilia Auction, and an Ice Cream Social, among others.

Each game is broadcast through the Nevada local radio station, KNEM KNMO. The Butler radio station will have the summer schedule available on our website and will announce and promote each game through our DJ’s and in our daily local newscast.

Our hope is to support the Nevada Griffons college baseball team and it’s players. See the www.921news.com website for the June and July schedule. See The Nevada Giffons at www.nevadagiffons.org on the web.

Clinton: Olde Glory Days/ Vendors Wanted

The dates are set for the Annual Greater Clinton Ole Glory Days Celebration. The dates are:

Wednesday, July 3rd through Saturday, July 6th, 2024

Sunday, July 7th: Gospel Fest and Fireworks

The committee is asking for Vendors to participate in the festivities.

To be a vendor complete the vendor forms and if you will be selling any items and are not currently a business in Clinton, MO complete the city permit form as well.

The vendor fees are listed on the vendor forms beside each sized space on the Clinton Chamber Faceabook page. Vendors are asked to make their  checks payable to Olde Glory Days.

Please be sure to read through the vendor rules and paperwork before signing up and paying your fees.

The City permit fee is $10 for the first day and $5 for each additional day. Make these checks payable to City of Clinton

Upgrades to the electrical system used during OGD on the Downtown Clinton Square are being completed. They have had some problems in the past with some vendors losing electricity for a short length of time…but once again, work to try to eliminate any issues with electricity are being worked on by the OGD committee, Henry Co. officials and B & L Electric here in Clinton.

Those same folks have asked the Clinton Chamber to pass this along; They  need to require even the 120v users to bring a 12-gauge extension cord to power your booth. The long runs of small cords created some of the issues in years’ past as the smaller wire requires more amperage flowing and overloads the circuits.

That’s the annual Ole Glory Days set in Clinton for July 3rd through July 7th in Clinton .
