Jo Beers, 90, of Joplin, formerly of Adrian
Per Jo Beers of Joplin, Missouri formerly of Adrian, Missouri request there will be no funeral or services, just a private family get-together to celebrate her life. Arrangements under the direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660) 679-6555) Butler, Missouri. Memorial contributions can be made to Phoenix Home Care and Hospice, 2613 S. Main St., Joplin, MO 64804. Online condolences www.schowengerdtchapel.com.
Alice Joanne Beers, age 90, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, May 25, 2024. Known all her life as “Jo”, she was born February 10, 1934 in Miller, Cleburne County, Arkansas, the daughter of Roy Elmer and Gladys Ferol (Dugger) Burns.
As a child of the 1930s and 40s in the South, she grew up with no electricity and no running water. Their bathroom was an outhouse, which she said was cold in the winter and hot in the summer. The family grew a huge garden and canned all the vegetables which were then stored in the cellar. They always had chickens, a milk cow and also raised a cow and pig to butcher for meat. They had a few apple trees and picked blackberries and huckleberries to make jams and pies. Jo aways said she guessed they were poor growing up but she never went hungry and had everything she needed to thrive with lots of love in the home.
Jo went to a two-room school with separate outhouses for girls and boys. The number one game they played outside was baseball. She was only able to complete 8th grade and left school to work in the fields to help support the family. This was not an uncommon practice for the time. Though she had very little schooling, she was highly educated about life in general and full of good ole common sense.
She married Harold Dee Wood on September 17, 1949 in Heber Springs, Arkansas. They had three children, then moved to California and had another child. They later divorced. Jo met Donald Eugene Beers in 1962 and after ten years together, they married December 1, 1972 in McAlester, Oklahoma. This union produced one daughter.
Jo and Don moved to Adrian, Missouri in 1968 and lived there until they retired in 1999 when they moved to Joplin, Missouri and lived next door to their daughter, Carolyn Hartsell and husband Eddie. While living in Adrian, Jo started a day-care which she ran for a little over 20 years. She loved the children she took care of and said they helped keep her young. In her lifetime she enjoyed embroidering, music and was an avid reader. She also loved to dance, doing the jitter bug with Don in their younger years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Billy and Max Burns; two sons, Bill and Steve Wood; two sisters-in law, Frankie and Loania Burns; and one son-in-law, Eddie “Tobe” Hartsell.
Survivors include her husband Don Beers of the home; one son, Jerry Wood and wife Kathy of Butler, Missouri; two daughters, Carolyn Hartsell of Joplin Missouri and Kathy Beers and partner Stephanie Mills of Belleville, Illinois; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Young of Hidden Valley Lake, California; one brother, Jim Burns and partner Shari Reed of Bella Vista, Arkansas; and two nephews, Jimmy Burns of Palm Springs, California and Rockey Burns and partner Robbin Gorman of Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
Jo was blessed with six grandchildren, Trent Wood of Middletown, California, Tara Mendez (deceased) of Santa Rosa, California, Sara Wood (Scott) of Hidden Valley Lake, California, Bethany Wood of Concord, California, Andrea Wood Baxter of Butler, Missouri and Michael Wood (Jennifer) of Holt’s Summit, Missouri. She also had ten great grandchildren.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Phoenix Home Care and Hospice for the care Jo received in the months before her death. A very special thank you to Brian Denmark and Brittany McHaffie for the loving care they gave to Jo whom they treated like family.

Carpenter's Cup to distribute sack lunches for children/ Sign-Up by
A Public Service Message from The Carpenter's Cup of Butler
Next Monday, June 3rd, is the projected start date for summer lunches from the Carpenters Cup to be delivered to the square and park just north of the Aquatic Center.
We have had money donations and some food donated. We have contacted other businesses to help with food donations. We have delivery drivers and we have some volunteers for the preparation of these lunches. Our plan is to give away 100 lunches Monday through Friday, from June 3rd until August 2nd. That brings us to a total of 4000 lunches. For this to be successful,
We will be in need of money and food the duration of the summer and for volunteers to help with the lunches (no more than 3 per day, kitchen too small). If you want to help for about 3 hours even for 1 day, it would be appreciated! Wednesday's are mostly full.
We have a calendar in the kitchen we sign people up on. Everyone is struggling in this economy, but those who struggled the most during the school year will have a harder time feeding their kids during the summer. Providing a kid with a sack lunch should be doable for a caring community like ours. If you can help, please call 660-679-3333. Thanks in advance!
Papinville History " Drainage Ditch and School Stories"
PAPINVILLE DRAINAGE DITCH AND SCHOOL STORIES
The Bates County Drainage Ditch is only in
Bates County. It is 24 miles long and the first digging was in 1907 and
completed in 1909. There were five working dredges and a lot of men from
Papinville worked the dredges and some of the women cooked for the workers. The
reason for the ditch was to help drain the bottom lands to help the farmers get
better crops in the low lands. The ditch was eighty to one hundred feet wide
and 12 feet deep. The farmers that lived in the ditch area were taxed $10.93
per acre. In 1911 there was a second digging to make the ditch 10 feet deeper.
They increased the tax $4.98 to what
they were already paying. Some of the farmers lost their farms over this tax.
The first bridge was made of wooden\steel and built like the historical bridge in Papinville. It was removed
from the forms on June 6,1995 due to a large drift pile wedged under the
bridge. The high waters came up fast and lifted the bridge. It floated on top
of the drift pile for four miles. This new bridge was completed in 1997. This
bridge is arched up high to keep the drift from building up underneath. The
ditch has not helped the farmers on bit. Since Truman Dam has been built the
flooding is worse and they can keep the high water on as long as they want to
protect Lake of the Ozarks. To walk the 5K Walk\Run continue to the blue gate or
you can come back from the drainage ditch bridge heading back to Papinville.
The new
bridge at Papinville had to be built first in order for the heavy equipment and
trucks to get to the ditch bridge when it was being built. It is built about
where the river boat landing was located.
The first school was built in 1868 when people
were moving back to Papinville. It was a two story school that was built to the
south of the school house that was built in 1895. The room that was built on to
the two story school was used for their lunch room, programs and the ladies
would meet there to make bandage wraps during the first and second world war.
The two story was torn down in the 1940’s and the one room school was used
until 1952. Then all of district 7 went to Prairie City to school. In 1957 all
the rural schools consolidated to Rich Hill. From 1952 to 1970’s the school was
used for elections. In 1991 the Prairie Township deeded the school property to
the Papinville Cemetery and Historical Association. When you get back to the
school and museum you can take a tour and learn more history.
Since the association started we have built a shelter house,
band stand, museum and a sidewalk of history. This event we are having June 8
is to help build a bigger museum and turn what is now the museum into a hall
for more activities and the hall can be rented to families or organizations for
events.
We hope you have
enjoyed the historical walk\ run stories and come out to Papinville to see and
learn more history. We will be serving grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, suzie
Q’s, drinks and desserts. The walk\ run will begin at 8:30, corn hole at 10:30,
wagon rides and adult \children’s games 11:00-2:00, lunch served 11:30 to 2:00,
music from 12:00 -2:30 and a $400.00 basket drawing at 2:00. Something for
everyone to enjoy. This is the last of the stories. Hope you have enjoyed them
and bring your lawn chairs. Papinville is east of Rich Hill A Highway to N
Highway go south on N to Papinville to the T road and turn right to museum. If
you have any questions call 816 590 1029.

Deputies from the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office found the vehicle and attempted to stop it again.
Butler Airport Clarification
The Bates County Sheriff released this clarification after an incident at the Butler Airport .
All parachuters on the plane exited prior to the pilot leaving the plane. They thought that would be evident by the line that says everyone was treated and released*****
Butler dispatch was notified about a small airplane that crashed by the Butler Missouri airport.
On arrival to the scene, first responders found the airplane in
a hay field east of the runways. The pilot had been able to parachute from the
plane prior to the plane crashing and was located at an hanger at the airport.
Everyone involved was treated by ems and released at the scene.
The plane is a total loss.
The Bates County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the NTSB and the
FAA in their investigations. Media inquires should be directed to those federal
agencies.
Thank you to Butler Fire, Adrian Fire, Butler Police and Bates
County EMS for your response and assistance at the scene.
Bates County Sheriff
On 5/24/24 at approximately 1:10am Deputies were notified that Kansas Officers were in pursuit of a GMC pickup truck entering Bates County.
The vehicle fled on Y Highway and turned onto 4002. The vehicle
attempted to turn onto State Line Road before leaving the roadway and through a
fence becoming immobile.
The occupant, later identified as Ryan Templeton, 43 fled on
foot from the vehicle. Prior to a K9 getting on scene a Deputy deployed a drone
and located subject in the woods lying in a creek bed. The drone was able to
guide K9 Falco and deputies to the subject where he was taken into custody by
Falco and held in place until secondary deputies could place him in handcuffs.
Templeton was taken to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment of his
injuries from Falco.
The truck was found to be stolen along with the license plate on
the vehicle and another plate inside the vehicle.
Templeton has a very extensive criminal history with multiple priors
for tampering with a motor vehicle and resisting arrest. Templeton had posted
bond on an unrelated warrant earlier in the day.
Templeton has been charged with receiving stolen property,
resisting arrest and property damage. Bond was set at $20,000 cash only.
Sheriff Anderson says, “Our priority is to Protect and Serve the
community. Having the appropriate tools and technology is helping us do just
that. I’m proud to work with the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office who put
their lives on the line to take career criminals off the streets while most of
Bates County are safe at home sleeping. We appreciate the great working
relationship we have with our Law Enforcement partners across the Kansas line
and appreciate them staying with our deputies to take this subject in custody”

Suddenly, it’s June, and all the exciting weather of springtime
continues. Some flying did get done, between weather fronts, and gratefully
there was no major damage around the airport from the wind and hail. The
telephone line was knocked out, which inhibited the automated self-serve fuel
pump for a while.
Folks ask me about letting an airplane sit outside in the weather,
and I tell them it’s not desirable, but if there’s no inside storage available
(which is normal) you just have to do the best you can. Stout 2000-lb nylon
ropes tied to solid anchors in the ground, mooring the plane at tie-down points
under the wings and tail, is a start. Then chock the wheels fore and aft, put
hefty external control surface locks on, and install a custom-fitted sunshield
over the cabin area to keep out water and sunlight. And the paint and interior
will still deteroriate.
The usual assortment of Cessna Skyhawk and Piper Archer training
airplanes came through last week, and we were also visited by a Cessna 182, a
Beech Bonanza and an RV homebuilt. Locally, Jay McClintock had students up in
his Piper Tomahawk and I did proficiency flying in the Cessna Skyhawk.
The long-promoted ICON A-4 light-sport amphibian airplane has a
clouded future; the company took Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month, attempting
reorganization. It took some doing to get it certified by the FAA under light
sport airplane rules, even with added weight allowance for its boat hull and
retractable landing gear. It was an attempt to find a new category of buyer,
with folding-wing storage, automotive interior styling, and the ability to land
on water or pavement. But two-seat aircraft never sell well, nor do water
planes, so sales have been limited and the price crept up.
Once Memorial Day is out of the way, it’s the airshow season. Next
weekend is the St. Louis airshow at Spirit of St. Louis (SUS) airport,
featuring the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds team, June 8 and 9. The EAA’s antique
Ford Tri-Motor will be barnstorming at Lee’s Summit airport on June 20 through
the 23; go to EAA.org to reserve a seat.
Our previous question of the week wanted to know “what is a blast
fence?” Often seen around the perimeter of big airports, where a roadway runs
alongside the taxiways and maintenance stands, it’s a tall sturdy structure to
deflect jet engine output so cars won’t be blown over. For next time, going back into history, what were “colored airways?” You can send your answer to [email protected].
