A tornado moved through Clinton on Wednesday evening as severe storms pushed across the region. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for central Henry County shortly before 6 p.m. Around 6:05 p.m., Henry County Emergency Manager Mark Hardin reported a tornado on the ground near Calvird Drive crossing Highway 13. The Clinton Fire Department later said a tornado confirmed by trained spotters entered the city around 6:15 p.m. near South Second Street and moved northeast.
Crews
reported damage to trees, homes and power infrastructure. One storage building
behind American Building Products was destroyed, and several power poles were
snapped. Multiple homes sustained minor to moderate damage.
Two schools,
Henry Elementary School and Clinton Intermediate School, had roof damage and
will be closed Thursday for cleanup and inspections. The district announced
earlier Wednesday night it will be using an AMI day.
Two diesel
storage tanks at another warehouse were blown over but were empty.
The Missouri
State Highway Patrol said troopers and multiple agencies responded to assist
with storm damage.
