Dale was born
December 8, 1937, in rural Miami County Township Sugar Creek, Kansas to Woodrow
Wilson Russell and Dorothy Arline (Reed) Russell. After graduation from Drexel High School in
1956, Dale enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he was stationed at Camp
Pendleton, California until his honorable discharge in 1958. Dale returned to Drexel and was employed by
Pat & Mike’s Grocery as a meat cutter.
He was trained at the Grocery by Mike but mostly used the skills taught
to him by his father, Woodrow, while growing up on the farm.
Dale married Jessie
Fleming on June 4, 1960. To this union,
a daughter and son were born. The couple
divorced many years later. Dale and Jessie
lived in Kansas City where Dale continued his occupation as meat cutter and
later as an independent delivery driver for Oscar Meyer Meats. In 1974 Dale purchased the Drexel Skelly
Service Station and the family moved to Drexel.
Dale’s extended family will forever cherish many fond memories of large
Russell gatherings at their home during this time.
Dale later returned
to meat cutting and was employed at Price Chopper until his retirement. He then became a Winter Texan, eventually
living there until November 2022 when he moved to Vintage Park Assisted Living
in Louisburg, Kansas until December 2024.
Dale enjoyed
motorcycle riding, motocross racing, fishing, hunting for mushrooms and
arrowheads, rebuilding cars and swimming in Sugar Creek.
