Cass County Juvenile Arrest

Yesterday just before noon, a Cass County deputy arrested a juvenile in Grandview after a pursuit that started in Belton.

The deputy noticed the driver was speeding as he headed southbound on Interstate 49 just south of E. 155th St. At this time, the deputy noticed the car had expired temporary tags. The driver continued driving recklessly as he changed directions, and eventually headed northbound on I-49.

The driver sped at excessive levels as he approached the Main St. overpass in Grandview. He slowed down and swerved to the right side of the roadway. He then got out of the car and began to flee on foot.

A Cass County deputy followed the juvenile suspect on foot as he entered a nearby apartment complex.

The deputy eventually arrested the juvenile suspect outside of a home in the area just moments later.

The Grandview and Kansas City Police Departments officers responded to this scene and assisted.

The juvenile suspect was released to the Cass County Juvenile Office with charges pending.

The flying year ended with challenging weather, typical of the stalled-out fronts that refuse to move in a normal progression across the country. For instrument pilots, the tops of the clouds were fairly low, but widespread low ceilings made finding a legal alternate airport for the flight plan difficult. We heard the B-2 bombers departing up in the clear, but only their sound signature betrayed their presence.

Only a few transient arrivals made it in last week, such as an ATD flight school Piper Warrior from Kansas City, a Cessna 172 and a Bellanca Citabria. Jeremiah McElroy took a local Cessna 150 up to honor the 121st anniversary of the Wright Bros. Birth of Powered Flight on the 17th, always a worthy achievement.

There is a public airport in extreme northern Minnesota that is closing due to limited use, unique in that it straddles the U.S./Canada border. Named Piney/Pine Creek, it has been a local fixture since 1955, offering 3250 feet of pavement, 2500 on the U.S. side and 750 in Canada. Pilots from either side could land and taxi across without violating strict pre-filed flight-plan rules for entry by air. Only in America can such wide-open access to each other’s country exist. However, MinDot no longer wants to maintain it, so it’ll be closing at year’s end.

The push to formulate 100-octane aviation gas without tetraethyl lead has hit another snag. The FAA authorized the use of General Aviation Modifications’ G100UL fuel based on extensive testing, yet the stuff now seems to cause paint discoloration and it makes nitrile rubber O-rings swell, so it’s not as simple as pouring in lead-free avgas where 100 low-lead was used. All to solve a minuscule pollution problem that didn’t show up until modern testing began to pick it up.

A Christmas Eve flight from Chicago to Hawaii arrived with a deceased passenger, but not one on the manifest list. The individual made the poor choice to hitch a ride inside the landing gear wheel well, kind of like climbing into a car’s trunk, except the space has no pressurization or heat. There’s a zero chance of survival, given the lack of oxygen at 40,000 feet and 70-degree below F. temperature. Most of the time, the frozen remains dump out when the gear is extended for landing, but not this time. Sad way to escape midwestern winter.

Our last-week question was about “T-Route” numbered airways, now showing up on sectional aeronautical charts. Those replace some VOR airways that disappeared when VORs were shut down, using GPS waypoints instead. For next year’s first question, tell us how much money was spent by German company Lillium that went bankrupt last week, trying to create electric aircraft. You can send your answers to [email protected].

Shooting Suspect in Custody in Belton

On 12-24-2024, Belton officers were dispatched to a residence in the 500 block of Kenneth Ln. regarding shots fired. Upon their arrival, officers found that a residence had been shot several times, but no injuries occurred. This was the third such incident involving this residence within the last week.

Officers began their investigation and were able to determine a suspect and suspect vehicle description which was broadcast to surrounding agencies. A short time later, officers were notified that the suspect vehicle had been located at a nursing facility in Raymore. Belton officers responded to the facility and, with the assistance of Raymore officers, were able to identify and locate the driver of the suspect vehicle. This individual was taken into custody for further investigation. Officers were also able to locate and recover a weapon of the same caliber used in the shooting at the scene.
On 12-25-2024, the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office charged Pharrell Canady of Belton with three counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and three counts of Armed Criminal Action in relation to these incidents. Pharrell is currently being held in the Cass County Jail on no bond. This is yet another example of the teamwork between your Belton officers, the public, our partner law enforcement agencies and the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office resulting in a dangerous criminal being taken off the streets.

Hipology Enhances Learning for 4-H members interested in Equine Science

Hippology is an activity that can enhance learning for 4-H members by letting them exhibit their knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry in a competitive setting. The term "hippology" comes from the Greek "hippo," meaning horse, and "ology," meaning "the study of." The primary objective of the Hippology Contest is to provide an opportunity for youth enrolled in a 4-H Horsemanship and Horseless Horse projects to demonstrate the depth and breadth of their horse knowledge in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendship and fairness prevail. The Hippology Contest has four phases: examination phase, station phase, judging phase and team problems.

There will be no limit on the number of teams sent, but counties are responsible for pre-assignment of contestants to teams with three minimum or four maximum youth. Hippology is a team event; however, individuals may participate in the test, judging and station sections of the contest. Individual participants are not eligible for team awards. They will be considered for the high point individual award. Please clarify on the form those on the team and those registering as individuals.

A team is composed of three or four members.

 Registration

This contest is open to all 4-H’ers. Registration is $25 per youth – no fee for coaches. Youth and coaches should register in  between Jan. 22 and Feb. 22, 2025. Late registration ($40) runs from Feb. 23 to March 2, 2025. No registrations will be accepted after March 2, 2025.

 Important Notice

Individual entries are welcome and will be eligible to compete for the top individual award. These individual entries will be grouped into a team in order to do the team problem. This is for experience purposes only and they will not be eligible for the team award. Hippology is a "team event" and a team is defined as not more than 4, but not less than 3 members.

 Rules and Resources

Resources for training a Hippology team

There are four phases to the Hippology contest. Each phase is worth 100 points. The first three phases are completed individually with each individual's points added for the team points.

Test phase: Questions may be multiple-choice or true false. Study the same resources as the horse bowl contest. Contestants may be required to look at slides and/or objects and identify certain facts (for example: color of the horse, blemishes, markings).

Judging Phase: See resources for horse judging. Usually judge two halter and two performance class. No oral reasons.

Stations: There may be 5-10 stations for a total of 100 points. Each station requires the contestant to look at a group of objects and be able to identify what it is and may be required to tell its purpose. There are hundreds of different subjects for stations. Some examples might be: identify the parts of the hoof, identify different feeds, identify the parts of the male or female reproductive tract, identify grooming tools etc.

Problem Solving: The team works on this together. Each team will be given a problem to solve. They are given the problem to read and 5-10 minutes to work together to prepare a solution. They present their solution to a judge. The judge evaluates the knowledge they have used to solve the problem, their work as a team (each person should present part of the solution), and their poise and speaking skills. The judge may ask questions to clarify or test the knowledge of the team.

Department of Natural Resources awards $62,242 grant to Clinton

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, DEC. 26, 2025 - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded $62,242 in assistance to the city of Clinton to develop a facility plan for evaluating the feasibility of regionalizing a nearby wastewater treatment system. Funded through the department’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund Regionalization Incentive Grant program, this grant will allow the city to evaluate the feasibility of constructing a sewer connection between Stoneridge Subdivision and the city’s wastewater system. The grant will fund 100% of the eligible costs to develop the plan, which is expected to be completed by January 2026.

The department’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund Regionalization Incentive Grant is a competitive grant program that offers competitive funding to municipalities as an incentive to construct connections for small, struggling facilities. The entities responsible for these small facilities often lack the financial and technical resources to upgrade their wastewater treatment facilities to meet more stringent limits and operate their facilities appropriately. These facilities typically serve such a small number of connections that the cost to comply with permit conditions is a significant financial challenge for the users.

“The department’s intention for this grant is to decrease the number of point sources discharging pollutants to the state’s waterways by promoting regional partnerships that would not be possible otherwise,” said Dru Buntin, Director of the Department of Natural Resources. “Water and wastewater systems are crucial infrastructure that aid community health and economic vitality.”

The department is committed to assisting Missouri communities with water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects. Through its Financial Assistance Center, the department provides funding opportunities for qualified communities with water quality, wastewater and drinking water infrastructure needs. This project will be funded wholly or in part with monies received from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

For more information on wastewater and drinking water funding opportunities, visit dnr.mo.gov/water/what-were-doing/state-revolving-fund-srf.

Betty Janelle Clark Schultz, 76, of Frisco, Texas

Betty Janelle Clark Schultz, 76, of Frisco, Texas, passed away on December 18, 2024, after a long hospitalization at Presbyterian Hospital, Plano, Texas, and Carrollton Regional Medical Center. Born on June 20, 1948, at Butler Memorial Hospital, Janelle was the daughter of James F. “Hap” Clark and Ruby Helen Dalgetty. At a young age, Janelle accepted Christ at the First Baptist Church in Butler and shared her musical talent by playing the piano for services.

She graduated from Butler High School in 1966 and went on to attend Central Missouri State University, majoring in Education, following in her mother's footsteps. At CMSU, she joined the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and met the love of her life, Francis (Frank) K. Schultz. They married on March 6, 1971, at Butler First Baptist Church, following her graduation in 1970.

Janelle began her teaching career in the North Kansas City, Missouri area and later moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where their son Neal was born.
