Mary Frances Bradley, 79, Boonville, MO

Mary Frances Bradley was born in Bates County Missouri on September 30, 1944.  She died on July 27, 2024, at Riverdell Care Center, Boonville, Missouri where she had lived for the past sixteen years.  She was in the presence of her family at the time of her death.  Frances' parents were James N. and Virginia (Bell) Bradley.  She was raised on the family farm just east of Rich Hill, Missouri.  She had two older brothers, James N. Bradley and David D. Bradley.  Both survive her.

Her early years revolved around farm life, 4H and the fun of all the Bell and Bradley first cousins.

Frances graduated from Rich Hill High School in 1962.  She attended Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri, where she made friends that lasted her lifetime.  She went on to graduate from the University of Missouri, Columbia.  After college, she worked for the Mental Health Association in New York City.  In 1981, she returned to Missouri doing similar work at the state level in Jefferson City.

It was her association with the Methodist Church in Jefferson City that inspired her to attend St. Paul's Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri.  While attending seminary she pastored at Methodist churches in Rockville and Schell City.

Frances' first charge was a group of rural churches in the Kirksville area.  On April 27, 1997, she suffered a brain aneurysm while in a church meeting.  This ended her career as a Methodist pastor.  But she still had many lessons to teach.

Frances was a social person.  She had to know everybody in the room.  She loved a spirited political debate.  She was a Democrat.  Bet she was respectful of others with different viewpoints.

Frances had a quick wit.  She described Coors Light beer as "the best well water I ever tasted."  After her aneurysm, while on a car ride and passing a cemetery, Frances was asked what inscription she would like on her tombstone.  A short pause and she said, "Up to now, everything was going pretty good."

Frances' last words were to tease her brother about his bald head.  She died minutes later.

Frances Bradley was a piece of work, God's work.  Sometimes, we learn from a person who is not trying to teach us.

Frances will be remembered by her brothers, sisters in law, cousins, nieces and nephews for her love, wit and unstinting support.  The world was a better place with her in it.  It is a better place for her having been in it.

A Celebration of Life Service will b held Saturday, August 24th at 11:00 am at the Heuser Funeral Home in Rich Hill with burial at a later date in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri.  The family suggest memorial contributions to the Rich Hill Methodist Church in care of Heuser Funeral Home, 320 E. As can be expected, global warming notwithstanding, Missouri in August has turned hot, leaving most flying to the early hours or perhaps after supper. The air aloft has been filled with drifted-in smoke from Canadian wildfires, along with dust that has circled the northern hemisphere from Asia, according to meteorologists. All we know is, we’ve been flying without a visible horizon line this week.

The refueling traffic had an Oshkosh-airshow flavor this week, including a lady flying a 1941 Piper J-4 vintage airplane, an RV-6A homebuilt, an experimental EAA Biplane flown by a bearded chap out of Abiline, Texas, and other show-bound planes too numerous to mention. Locally, Bill and Ryan Sparks flew their 1967 Cessna Skyhawk up to the show, as did Jeremie Platt in his Grumman Tiger. Randy Miller and I took the club Skyhawk over to Miami County for the Fliars breakfast and I ferried a Cessna 150 to Clinton for maintenance.

The story in last week’s paper about wildlife artist Rebekah Knight failed to mention that she’s also an accomplished pilot, including seaplane certification. As well as a violinist of some renown, an art she also teaches. There’s nothing Rebekah can’t do if she puts her mind to it.

The latest news on the Stockton, MO airport is that it’s been purchased by a private individual and is going to be developed as a commercial enterprise, with an eye to supporting the Stockton Lake area as a destination. So, the airport has a future rather just being abandoned.

If you want to use the Nevada airport, do it in the coming week. It’s scheduled to be shut down on August 12th while the secondary crosswind runway 13/31 is being rebuilt. The work involves that runway’s intersection with the primary 2/20 runway, but liability concerns cause the whole airport to be closed. You and I would just throw up some barricades and keep one runway in use, but contractors in this day and age want to take the easy route and keep all traffic away. No word on how many months it’ll be unavailable, but with Harrisonville also still closed, Butler or Clinton are about the only options.

“Whacha see at Oshkosh?” is a query fellow air-nuts tossed me this week. I’d have to say “lots”, but the flavor was decidedly military this year. The most impressive formation flight was a Heritage Flight link-up with a WW-II P-51 Mustang, an F-22 super-fighter, an F-35 and an F-16, in diamond formation. The RCAF’s Canadian Snowbirds put up a 9-ship show, but the Italian Air Force did them one better with a 10-plane Frecce Tricolori (3-color arrow) grouping.

Our question from the previous column was regarding the horsepower of the Piper Cherokee 140 trainer. Widely reported as a 140-hp Lycoming, the actual type certification calls it a 150-hp O-320; the 140 designation was for a training setting at 2450 rpm. The brain-teaser for next week is, when the American paratroops dropped into France at night 80 years ago on D-day, how did they locate one another after they landed? You can send your answers to [email protected].

Mary Frances Bradley, age 79 of Boonville (formerly of Rich Hill)

Mary Frances Bradley, age 79 of Boonville, MO (formerly of Rich Hill, MO) passed away Saturday, July 27, 2024 in Boonville. Funeral services and family information are pending and will be announced later by the Heuser Funeral Home, Rich Hill, MO.

Hailey Leeann Slinger, age 22

It is with great sadness that the family of Hailey Leeann Slinger announces her passing. Hailey, age 22, left us in the early morning of July 21st, 2024, due to a tragic accident.  Memorial services will be held 6:00 pm Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler (660-679-0009).  Memorial contributions may be made to Heart-n-Hand Ministries.  Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com.

Hailey was born to Julie (Hauenschild) and Shane Slinger in Kansas City, MO on February 6th, 2002.  In her short life, Hailey was loved by many, who enjoyed her various talents, including singing and her love of music. She was known to have bright blue eyes, a vibrant smile, and a spirited attitude. She was outgoing and cared deeply about others. She was diagnosed at the age of 13 with mental health disorders, which greatly affected her daily life thereafter and indirectly led to her death. Hailey would often speak of how hard it was to live with these disorders and the many ups and downs she experienced. Her circle of support included her immediate family and beyond. This circle was there to support her in any way possible, celebrating the smallest of wins. Hailey enjoyed going to concerts and taking road trips, she even made a trip to Graceland to experience everything Elvis and to Myrtle Beach to spend a week with her dad. She loved cheering for her brother, Walker when he wrestled and spending time with her family.  As Hailey was growing up, she looked forward to watching NASCAR races with Papa David and each rooting for their drivers.  She, also, didn’t miss many episodes of WWE and went several times to see a live show. The anecdotes of Hailey’s life are endless, as she leaves different memories with each of her family and friends.

Hailey is survived by her mother Julie (Louis and son Louie) Hauenschild of Overland Park, KS; her father Shane Slinger of Rock Hill, SC; siblings, Walker Slinger and Krista Leonard both of Belton, MO, and Grace Holmes of Independence, MO; grandmother Peggy Short of Belton, MO; Danny (Amanda, children Aidan and Owen) Scrogham of Peculiar, MO and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by Grandfather David Short; Grandmother Linda Slinger; and Grandfather Robert Slinger.

Upon graduation, Harry enlisted in the Army National Guard, Battery B 1st Howitzer Battalion 129th Artillery, Kirksville, MO. He continued to serve through 1963. During this time, he was an Artillery Specialist receiving several Marksmanship badges. Harry farmed with his brother-in-law, Larry McClannahan, and then purchased and operated a milk route in the area. Harry attended three years of college at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville, MO.

In the early 1960’s, the couple moved to the Springfield area and eventually purchased a farm near Willard, MO, where he and Linda had horses and raised Charolais cattle. Harry also was a pitcher for a community fastpitch softball league. Harry always enjoyed camping, hunting, and spending time in the woods with his sons and grandsons, although his sons may have spent more time cutting wood with him than hunting.

Harry served as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and sang in the church choir. Harry led by example, teaching his children the value of hard work, integrity, honesty, gratitude, humility, and loyalty. He cared for and provided for his family and was a loyal caretaker of his wife through her extended illness. Harry made sure his family knew his Lord and Savior, by being involved in the church as a family, reading Bible stories every night at bedtime when his children were young, and living a life of servanthood. Harry never complained and was always happy. You would never find Harry talking about himself or others, but you would always find him helping.

Alex Wilson D.O. Bates County Memorial

Bates County Memorial Hospital Welcomes Alex Wilson, D.O., to Medical Staff

Bates County Memorial Hospital (BCMH) is pleased to announce the addition of Alex Wilson, D.O., to its medical staff. As a trained Hospitalist and Family Practice physician, Dr. Wilson will see patients admitted to the hospital, as well as patients at Nursery Street Family Care Clinic on a limited clinic schedule in August.

Wilson said the beginning of his interest in a healthcare career started in sixth grade, when his mother was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer, and he saw how the nurses and doctors worked as they took care of her. After graduating from Adrian High School in 2012, he initially wanted to pursue a nursing major. He started as a CNA working for the nursing home in Adrian (previously, Adrian Manor).

“I took some chemistry classes and really enjoyed that side of it, so that kind of pushed me into the pre-medicine route. And then when I did some rotations and volunteer work with Dr. Miller here, that’s what sealed the deal and made me pursue a career in medicine,” Wilson said.

BCMH played an integral role in Wilson’s path to becoming a doctor. He explains, “I did a rotation during my fourth year of medical school where I worked with both Dr. Miller and Dr. Crary – Dr. Crary in the hospital and Dr. Miller in the outpatient setting. I did that during COVID when our medical was shut down, so I did that as an opportunity to get back home and help where it was needed, but also to get my feet wet in medicine here and see if this was a good route for me to take. It definitely was and I ended up taking a preceptorship rotation which is a month rotation at the end of my residency, and I worked primarily with Dr. Crary during that time, which worked well with the hospitalist perspective.”

During his residency program, his choice of specializing as a Hospitalist was solidified. Wilson said, “I just liked the acuteness of being able to treat patients right then and there, get studies done, and see people improve in a short amount of time.”

Alex Wilson attended Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, completing his Doctorate of Osteopathy (DO) in 2021. He finished his residency program with Genesis Family Medicine – University of Iowa in Davenport, Iowa this year in 2024. Wilson is board certified with the American Board of Family Medicine.

He and his wife, Savannah, have established their home in Butler, and they are expecting their first child in October.

Infusion Center Dedication Bates County Memorial

Open House a Success for Long-Nissen Infusion Center at Bates County Memorial Hospital

Bates County Memorial Hospital (BCMH) is pleased to announce the Curtis W. Long, MD and Gay L. Nissen, RN Infusion Center is open and seeing patients. On July 21, BCMH welcomed visitors to an Open House of the Long-Nissen Center.

Tours of the new space were led by outpatient clinic nurses Karla Short, RN and Carly Murdock, RN, BSN, and Ann Donnohue, RN and Outpatient Specialty Clinic Manager, pointing out features like private and semi-private rooms, patient recliners in every room with heat and massage controls, comfortable visitor seating, and an air filtration system that sanitizes 99.9% of airborne bacteria in the infusion area with a push of a button.

BCMH recognized donors to the infusion center at the Open House, and Dr. Curtis W. Long was the guest of honor, along with his assistant nurse, Gay Nissen, RN. The Long-Nissen Infusion Center was named for Dr. Curtis Long in thanks for his generous donation, who has provided many years of service to BCMH. Dr. Long has stated that it has been his privilege as a family physician to have delivered 3,000 babies in Bates County, and to perform the first laparoscopic procedure in the state of Missouri right here at BCMH. Gay Nissen has worked with Dr. Long as his nurse for over 40 years.

Others who contributed to the Long-Nissen Infusion Center included:

·        Bates County Community Health Foundation donated $10,000 to purchase patient recliners, and more than $3,000 from their annual golf tournament.

·        BCMH Auxiliary volunteers covered the cost of a blanket warmer and all guest furniture, a gift totaling $21,871.

·        Montrose School district gifted $1,065, proceeds from their Pink Night fundraiser in February, which enabled the purchase of rolling patient trays for all rooms.

·        The BCMH Plant Operations department donated funds to purchase a beverage refrigerator for patients.

·        Reegan Koshko, age 17, donated photography of local rural landscapes in Bates County in memory of her mother, Cheyanna Hellwig, who passed away at the age of 32 from breast cancer. Reegan is a senior at Appleton City High School. She attended the event with her grandmother, Carolyn Hellwig.

·        William and Linda Gollhofer gave a cash donation for the Long-Nissen Infusion Center.

The Long-Nissen Infusion Center is staffed by a team of chemotherapy certified nurses, and patients of Heather Dains, Oncology Nurse Practitioner, will be seen in the new space. Oncologist Jaswinder Singh, MD will continue to see patients on the first floor of the hospital in Outpatient Specialty Clinics.

Infusion services include chemotherapy and immunotherapy, as well as non-cancer therapies, including outpatient IV antibiotic therapy, allergy injections, injections and infusions for various disease processes and preventative medication management.

BCMH has provided infusion services, including chemotherapy, since the 1990s. In 2004, the hospital offered 517 infusions. In 2024, Ann Donnohue predicts they will perform close to 3500, thanks to the expansion of patient care through the Long-Nissen Infusion Center.

University of Missouri (MU) Extension is providing information on how to grow herbs indoors year-round in a hydroponic system at home. But, what is Hydroponics? It is a method of growing plants in soilless cultivation where the plant nutrients, normally derived from the soil, are simply dissolved in water, and taken up by roots suspended in the soilless medium or directly in the solution. Because it is indoors, temperature and light can be managed for production year-round. This way, homeowners can enjoy fresh herbs anytime right from their patch. Tabletop hydroponic herb production systems can be built with parts purchased at local home supply stores or ready to use kits available on the internet. MU Extension is giving a free class on how to grow herbs at home using hydroponics on July 29, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 555 Walnut St., Osceola, MO.
