Message From the Desk of Trent Diehl, Director of Butler Public Works

This memorandum is intended to explain the probable cause of the "taste and odor" complaints we are receiving. The most likely primary source of the problem is algae, specifically Synedra. When the algae synedra is oxidized, it gives off an odor that is comparable to a dirty\earthy smell. Low lake levels and excessive heat accentuate the problem. To alleviate the problem, we are raising the lake level by running the river pump, increasing treatments to the lake with copper sulfate, cleaning the clarifiers at the plant. and exploring alternate methods of treatment for the alage. I contacted a water specialist from Missouri Rural Water Association (MRWA). He was a former employee at MoDNR. I wanted to get his assessment of the situation. He was here on Friday to perform a microscopic evaluation of the water coming into the plant. This was to verify the cause of the problem. After the evaluation is complete, I will update you with any additional information if needed.
