After years of battling heart disease and congestive heart failure, Chris passed away at Lee Summitt Medical Center on January 21st, 2025.
Chris attended and graduated from Butler High School in 1988. After graduation in 1988, he joined the US Navy, studying communications and working as a machinist's mate. Chris was stationed on the USS Constellation ship, which was later decommissioned. Christopher achieved the rank of E-4 Petty Officer Third Class in the Navy. During his time in the Navy, Chris served his country and, in the process, visited different countries and many other places in the States. Upon finishing his active duty in 1992 and discharging from the Navy, Chris moved from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was stationed, back to Butler, Missouri, with his two children. Later, Chris moved to Rich Hill, Missouri, where his children attended and graduated from school.
Chris was a hard-working man who had worked many jobs throughout his life. He was known for being able to do a little bit of everything and “knowing enough to be dangerous.” Chris loved watching NASCAR and dirt track racing with his children and watching the Chiefs play. He also loved arrowhead hunting with his children and friends. Chris loved listening to many different rock music genres, and you could always catch him playing his music as loud as possible. He was also known for always having a smile on his face, no matter what. Chris bought a plot of land in 2019 and, from there, built his home from the ground up. He spent his remaining free time working on his house and working on the dream of rebuilding his Ford Ranchero.
Chris is survived by his beloved children, Heather Embrey (Sawyer Helm) of El Dorado Springs and Kevin Embrey (Erica Resz) of Nevada; many beloved grandchildren; Stepfather Jerry Heckadon of Appleton City; siblings Vickie Ross (Boone) of Rich Hill, Ginger Handy (Joe) of Rich Hill, Sammy Embrey of Rich Hill, Sandra Cole of Butler, Clint Grosshart (Brenda) of Adrian, and Michelle Embrey of Columbus, KS; his beloved dog Chopper and cat Sly; and many other family member along with many friends from all walks of his life.

On January 29, 2025 the Bates County Commission signed an ordinance implementing the Senior Tax Credit. The tax credit is for Bates County citizens who are 62 years of age or older when the credit is applied for. Citizens must apply for the tax credit annually with the Bates County Clerk’s Office between the first Monday in February and the last Monday in April. Applicants must submit a copy of their deed that shows them as the legal owner of the property, photo identification and proof of residency. The application is also required to be notarized. The Applicant’s primary residence must be in Bates County, Missouri. The tax credit only applies to your residence, your home. It does not include any outbuildings or acreage. The applicant must not owe any delinquent taxes. Due to the Hancock Amendment the tax credit can only be applied to the Bates County tax levy. Currently the Bates County tax levy is $0.2677 per $100 of assessed valuation. All other tax levies are excluded from the credit. The tax credit does not give any money back to the applicant. It only freezes the valuation of your residence at the time you apply.
To
pick up an application please come to the Bates County Clerk’s Office Monday
through Friday during normal business hours.
If you would like the application emailed to you, please email the
County Clerk at [email protected].

Parents of Rich Hill Students, the school is down a bus driver for the foreseeable future. The school has a few people going through the training process, which takes several months, so at this time the Rich Hill School does not have a driver who can cover the route east of Interstate 49. They will continue to work on a solution, but until they secure a driver, parents east of 49 will need to arrange transportation for their children to and from school until further notice, and this will also affect Early Childhood. The Rich Hill School System is working on the problem, but the school has no solution at this time.

Our small rural shelter runs primarily on volunteers, and we need more help. Most all of our money goes to the care of the homeless pets that we take in. We only have two full-time employees and a handful of part-time employees. We literally pretty much function with volunteers and with all of the donations that are received by our awesome supporters and some funds from the City of Clinton. Sadly, because of the high number of homeless pets we just don't have enough volunteers. People to socialize with them pets is so important. A walk, car ride or just hanging out in the playyard or cat room is vital to their well-being. We also have other things volunteers can do such as laundry, dishes, cleaning and more. If you can help an hour a week or even a couple hours a month please let us know. Call 660-885-7999 or stop by the shelter. You can also email [email protected].
