Black Bear Season

Missouri’s 2024 black bear hunting season ran Oct. 21-30 with 15 bears taken out of a maximum harvest of 40.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports Missouri hunters harvested 15 black bears during the state’s fourth bear hunting season, Oct. 21-30.

More than 5,969 hunters applied during May for 400 permits for the season with the maximum total harvest being 40 bears. Of the 400 hunters selected through a random drawing of all applicants, 319 hunters purchased permits for the season.

Bear hunting in Missouri is limited to Missouri residents and restricted to three designated areas of southern Missouri called Bear Management Zones (BMZ). Each permit issued is for a specific BMZ and hunting is limited to public or private property within the BMZ.

Twelve bears were harvested in BMZ 1 out of a maximum of 20 with 166 hunters purchasing permits to hunt the zone. Three bears were harvested in BMZ 2 out of a maximum of 15 with 121 hunters purchasing permits to hunt the zone. No bears were harvested in BMZ 3 out of a maximum of five with 32 hunters purchasing permits to hunt the zone.

Of the bears taken, 13 were harvested using firearms methods, one was harvested with archery equipment, and one was harvested with a crossbow. Ten of the harvested bears were males and five were females.

“We had another successful black bear hunting season this year,” said MDC Furbearer Biologist Nate Bowersock. “Despite the acorn crop potentially being above average, hunters were able to harvest a record number of bears. This could be due to the dryer fall conditions, which likely caused bears to move more often in search of water.”

Butler Police Department Press Release

KC Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Fentanyl Conspiracy

Fentanyl Trafficking Resulted in the Three Overdose Deaths
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City, Mo., man was sentenced in federal court today for his role in a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, which resulted in the deaths of three persons.
Luis Manuel Morales, 24, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark to 15 years in federal prison without parole.
On May 8, 2024, Morales pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Morales admitted that he was a source of supply of fentanyl pills for co-defendant Tiger Dean Draggoo, 24, of Kansas City, Mo. On occasion, Draggoo also served as a source of supply of fentanyl pills for Morales. Morales also introduced Draggoo to additional sources of fentanyl pills.
Morales sold at least 1,764 pills to Draggoo over 15 separate transactions from Jan. 17 to Oct. 29, 2022, for which he was paid $2,320 through Cash App and an additional amount in cash. Morales also purchased at least 100 fentanyl pills from Draggoo during this time period, for which he paid $750. In total, those 1,864 pills contained approximately 205 grams of fentanyl.
Morales and Draggoo conspired to conceal and disguise the nature of the transfer of funds through Cash App by referring to the payments as “rent,” “food clothes,” “clothes,” “food and beer,” “food,” “apt rent,” “reimbursement for mechanic,” and “reimbursement car payment.”
Morales was on probation at the time that he was supplying Dragoo with fentanyl pills, following his guilty plea in state court to attempted armed robbery after he and another person robbed a victim at gunpoint.
Morales is the first defendant in this case to be sentenced. On Oct. 16, 2024, Draggoo pleaded guilty to his role in the fentanyl conspiracy and to three counts of distributing fentanyl resulting in death. Five additional defendants have pleaded guilty and await sentencing.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brad K. Kavanaugh and Robert Smith. It was investigated by the Jackson County Drug Task Force, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Belton, Mo., Police Department, the Raymore, Mo., Police Department, the Cass County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department, and the FBI.

Belton Police Department Recovers Eight Pistols From KC Juvenile.

Just before 5:00 a.m., on October 19th, officers were dispatched to 163rd and Speaker Ave. on a suspicious activity call. A citizen reported seeing a subject checking several vehicles' door handles then enter a black Kia SUV. Officers arrived and located a matching car parked unattended but still running. Seconds later, an officer nearby alerted others via radio a male subject wearing a ski mask and carrying a flashlight was fleeing from him.

After a small foot chase, officers captured and detained the male subject, who officers learned was only 17 years of age. A computer check revealed that the Kia SUV was stolen from Blue Springs. Searching the subject's path resulted in locating a Glock pistol with an extended magazine. A gold block device was affixed to the rear of the slide, where typically the slide ends. Officers are trained to recognize this as a "Glock Switch" (a machine gun conversion device).

During a tow inventory of the Kia SUV, officers located a live ammunition round under the passenger seat and a backpack on the seat containing seven additional handguns. All eight guns were recovered in total. Further details of this case, including the name, cannot be released due to the age of the juvenile detained.

Pleasant Hill Students Injured By Falling Tree Branch

One student was hospitalized and several others were hurt after a tree fell outside Pleasant Hill Elementary School on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.

According to Pleasant Hill Police Chief Tommy Wright, at about 1:45 p.m., several students were hit by a falling tree during recess. This resulted in a fourth grade student being taken to a hospital with suspected “serious injuries,” and many others evaluated by emergency response teams and school nursing staff.

Police said the tree was “deteriorated” and not on the school’s property. It was also reported that high winds were a factor in the tree falling. Wind speeds in Pleasant Hill were clocked at nearly 50 mph at about 2 p.m. — 15 minutes after the incident.

Pleasant Hill School Superintendent Wayne said children likely won’t be on this playground again anytime soon, until the district can determine its safe and try to work with the rental property owner to get the tree removed.

Parents were notified and the case is currently under investigation. The student injured is reported to be in critical condition.

Suggested Banner: Any Takers For Joplin Airport?

The normal Fliars Club breakfast flyout and SkyDive KC operations last Saturday morning were interrupted by a mishap, as the runway was closed by an airplane sitting on its belly instead of the wheels. The Beech Twin Bonanza landed normally, but the left main landing gear collapsed during the rollout. Fortunately, these incidents don’t cause injuries, just inconvenience and expense. Veteran airplane retrieval person Tom Spencer came riding to the rescue and had the field open after a couple of hours.

Other less-eventful visitors were a Cessna 182 a Cessna Skyhawk, a Piper Warrior and a Beech Bonanza V35. Locally, Jon Laughlin was flying his beautifully-refurbished Piper Cherokee 180C, and Jeremie Platt and I flew our respective Grumman and Cessna planes to Paola, returning after taking temporary refuge at Harrisonville’s nice new concrete runway.

If you’re not inclined to take on the job of Butler Airport’s airport manager position, now open, you might check out the Joplin Airport’s posting. They are looking for something qualified to run their airport, which has airline and corporate flights, along with a control tower and FBO, encompassing nearly 1000 acres of land. Starting salary is $67,860, and you must agree to be on call 24 hours a day in case of emergency.

Nevada airport is reportedly due to re-open November 12th, after a summer-long closure while the auxiliary runway 13/31 was reconstructed. Hopefully, Butler’s planned lighting maintenance upgrade won’t tie us up as long as our neighbors have had to endure.

FAA press releases touting the benefits of the removal of Flight Instructor expiration dates are entirely one-sided. As of December 1, 2024, CFI certificate holders will no longer have their new ID cards come with a two-year life expectancy. But, that doesn’t mean they can instruct forever; rather, it just means the FAA won’t bother printing up a new certificate after one makes application and meets the renewal criteria. CFI’s still have to be sufficiently active, or attend a renewal course, to avoid losing their privileges, and they still have to fill out paperwork and keep track of their due date. The change just saves the government a rather-bloated claim of $5.6 million.

Last week, we asked for someone to tell us what Charles Lindbergh is known for being the first to do when he hopped over the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. Lots of other people had flown across the Atlantic before Lindy. But no one had flown from New York to Paris non-stop, and publisher Raymond Ortig offered a $25,000 prize for it, which Lindbergh won. For next week, tell us, what is a Powered Lift

aircraft? You can send answers to [email protected]
